چکیده

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only known modifiable risk factor for glaucoma. Besides being a cornerstone in glaucoma management, accurate measurement of IOP forms an important component of routine ophthalmic evaluation. Despite the innovation of various newer tonometers, Goldmann applanation tonometer is still considered the Gold standard for IOP measurement. However, there are several reported sources of error including calibration error.1 Errors in calibration of Goldmann applanation tonometer are often overlooked in clinical practice. Kumar and Jivan2 conducted a questionnaire survey of 100 ophthalmology residents from UK. 85% of respondents to their questionnaire never checked tonometers for errors.2 Wessels and Oh3 did a field survey of 94 ophthalmologists’ offices to assess the accuracy of tonometers in daily use. Less than 15% of ophthalmologists in their study knew how to perform calibration error testing.3 Given the importance of applanation tonometry in glaucoma management and the ease of calibration error testing, these figures are surprising.

Goldmann applanation tonometry in the conscious rat.

PURPOSE To determine whether the Goldmann applanation tonometer can be modified to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) in the conscious rat. METHODS In anesthetized rats Goldmann tonometers were tested that had reduced biprism angles in the applanating tips and reduced weights in the tonometer body from those used in humans and species with similar size eyes. Tonometers with tips with biprism ...

Comparison of intraocular pressure measurement between rebound, non-contact and Goldmann applanation tonometry in treated glaucoma patients.

BACKGROUND To compare the intraocular pressure readings obtained with the iCare rebound tonometer and the 7CR non-contact tonometer with those measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry in treated glaucoma patients. DESIGN A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in a private tertiary glaucoma clinic. PARTICIPANTS OR SAMPLES One hundred nine (54 males : 55 females) patients includ...

Effect of corneal parameters on measurements using the pulsatile ocular blood flow tonograph and Goldmann applanation tonometer.

AIMS To investigate the effect of central corneal thickness and corneal curvature on intraocular pressure measurements using the pulsatile ocular blood flow tonograph and the Goldmann applanation tonometer, and to assess the agreement between the pulsatile ocular blood flow tonograph and the Goldmann applanation tonometer in intraocular pressure measurement. METHODS 479 subjects underwent int...

Two-position measurement of intraocular pressure by PT100 noncontact tonometry in comparison with Goldmann tonometry

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the precision of intraocular pressure measurements obtained by PT100 noncontact tonometry in a handheld and slit lamp-mounted position in comparison with that of Goldmann applanation tonometry in healthy young adults. METHODS Sixty eyes from 60 subjects (30 men and 30 women) aged 22 ± 1 (range 20-24) years participated in this study. Tripli...

Goldmann tonometer error correcting prism: clinical evaluation

PURPOSE Clinically evaluate a modified applanating surface Goldmann tonometer prism designed to substantially negate errors due to patient variability in biomechanics. METHODS A modified Goldmann prism with a correcting applanation tonometry surface (CATS) was mathematically optimized to minimize the intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement error due to patient variability in corneal thickness,...
